Soccer Highlights
October 29: On Saturday, October 29, way back when we were still in the 21st century, had electricity, phone, and television; the Salisbury Central boys took part in the Berkshire Country Day School soccer tournament. The tournament’s format of short games was not a good fit for our boys and their season-long practice of using second half magic. Though they showed great heart and hustle, Salisbury was narrowly defeated in their first two games. What then followed were two strong performances resulting in victory, so that the Red Hawks qualified for the consolation match against the host school, BCD. After having lost to our boys during the round-robin round, BCD began the game with great passion and quickly took control, ultimately winning four to one. Overall, the Red Hawks finished fourth. Goals were scored by Finn, who had two, Erin, Jason, George, and Stephen. The boys had a fine season with eighth wins, two losses, and a tie. Coach Bucceri thanks all those who helped to support our team. Well done!
Soccer players are reminded to return their uniforms to Mr. Bucceri as soon as possible.
October 26: The girl's soccer team finished off their season with a 6-0 win over Kent yesterday. It was a fitting send off for all of our 8th graders. Lauren scored a hat trick that included a penalty kick. Olivia, Lauryn and Daisy scored one goal each. Angela, Johanna, and Sabrina were tough in goal and they all combined their efforts for the shut out. The team's finish to the season was quite spectacular. Saturday they went 5-0 and won the BCD Tournament and they won all three of their consecutive games this week. Their final record was 10-2. Congratulations on a terrfic season girls!
As has happened many times this season, the Salisbury Central boys’ soccer team began its game against Kent Center School slowly. They had several chances to score among their seven first half shots on goal, but only put one in the back of the net; a beautiful shot by Finn into the lower far corner of the goal off a nice feed by Nick. This year’s Red Hawks have been a second half team and this game was no different. They scored seven times to put the game away. Towards the end, Salisbury gave up a late breakaway goal and the final score was eight to one. Finn had two goals, as did Jason, Seth, George, Elliot, and Liam each scored once. In addition to Nick, Brodie assisted twice, while Liam, Finn, Jason, and Nate added individual assists. The boys finish the regular season with eight wins, two losses, and a tie as they head towards the Berkshire Country Day School Tournament on Saturday. Great job!
October 25: The girls' soccer team pulled off a real nail biter win yesterday. They defeated North Canaan 3-2. Salisbury dominated the first half and the score at half time was 3-0. Olivia put Salisbury on the board with an early goal and Lauren added two more to put SCS ahead. Johanna was stellar in goal. She only allowed one goal and a penalty kick in during the second half. Our girls hung in there until the final whistle. It was an exciting win! Way to go girls. They are off to Kent for their final game of the season this afternoon. We are very proud of their successful season. They represented their school well.
It was another exciting game between the Salisbury Central boys and the Knights of North Canaan yesterday. Though the action was end to end, the Red Hawks were only able to put one shot on goal and neither side was able to score in the first half. During the second half, our boys played with intelligence, skill, and heart, peppering the North Canaan goal with seven shots. It was the North Canaan side that scored first, however, with a high shot that was beyond goalkeeper’s Erin’s grasp. The Red Hawks struggled desperately to even the score and their efforts were rewarded with two minutes remaining in the game when Jason pushed in a wonderful cross from Elliot. Final score: North Canaan - 1, Salisbury Central - 1. Our boys played remarkably well in the second half and the defense of Jensen, Elliot, Amos, Garett, Liam, and Julian were stronger than in any other game this season.
October 24: Our Lady Red Hawks are really on a roll! They defeated a very competitive Hotchkiss Thirds team yesterday 6-4. Salisbury's offense looked their best by making great passes and talking to each other. Lauren scored four goals, one of which she sent into the goal off her head! Olivia added two more goals to keep Salisbury in the lead. Grace, Oihana, Johanna, and Olivia all had assists throughout the game. The goal tending was shared by Bailey, Hannah, Johanna, and Sabrina. Sabrina made a save that may have been the best of the season! The girls play an undefeated Canaan team today. Come show them your support! The girls compete their season tomorrow with an away game in Kent.
October 22: The girl's soccer team traveled to the BCD Tournament this weekend and brought home the first place trophy. They won 4-20 minute games and scored a total of 15 goals. In the 30 minute championship game they beat Rudolph Steiner 1-0. Lauren led the team with 10 goals, Grace scored 3 goals, and Olivia and Lauryn each scored once. Our goaltenders only allowed one goal to be scored against them in the entire tournament. Johanna played in 2 games, and Angela, Hannah, and Olivia each tended the goal for one game. The victories were truly a team effort. We had 18 girls attend the tournament and they all played in at least 4 of the 5 games. Way to go girls! The girls play home today against Hotchkiss 3rds and home tomorrow against an undefeated Canaan team. Come cheer them on!
October 17: The girl's soccer played a tough game against Canaan yesterday. The entire team gave it their all, but they could not put any balls in the net. The final score was 4-0. Angela and Johanna each made many great saves in the goal. Ari and Hannah played steady defense and held Canaan off for most of the game. The girls will meet Canaan again next Tuesday at home for a rematch. Come cheer them on.
In a much-anticipated match, the Salisbury Central boys worked very hard against a strong North Canaan side. The Red Hawks gained the lead early with a wonderful goal by Jason on a header off a great corner kick by Seth. Salisbury kept their advantage until late in the first half when they lost a bit of their defensive organization and North Canaan evened the score. The second half was very exciting with a great deal of end-to-end action. The Red Hawks had numerous scoring chances, including two penalty kicks, one of which hit the crossbar, the other of which was saved by the Knights goalkeeper. Salisbury’s keeper, Justin kept the Red Hawks in the game with several early saves. In the end, it was a masterful shot by Seth on a free kick from about 20 yards away from the goal that went into the far lower corner and won the game. Our boys now have seven wins and two losses. Well done!
October 12: The girls brought home a victory yesterday with a 6-1 win over Falls Village. This win improves their record to 8-1. Lauren and Olivia led the team with 2 goals apiece. Gracie and Molly each added another of their own. The star of the game goes to Leah who sparked her teammates on with her hustle. Kudos to Hannah, Sabrina, Bailey, and Lauren for taking a turn in the goal. The girls travel to play an undefeated Canaan team on Monday. Wish them luck!
In their first meeting of the season, Coach Bucceri gave the undermanned team from Lee H. Kellogg School his primary defensive players. Yesterday, in the rematch, he sent over his better offensive young men. For a long time in the first half, no one was able to score. Late in the half, Nate was able to push the ball across the goal line off a scramble in front. Shortly afterward, Seth scored a pretty goal from a feed by Stephen. In the second half, Salisbury’s fitness took over. Seth, in particular, led the attack with two more goals and an equal number of assists. Julian scored his first goal of the season and Nate put another in the back of the net, so that the final score was Red Hawks: 6, Kellogg: 0. Brodie made some great saves in goal late in the game. Congratulations go to Finn, Jason, Ian, Erin, and, later, Stephen, who worked very hard for the Kellogg side. Great job, everyone!
October 5: The girls’ soccer team played a terrific game on Wednesday against Rudolph Steiner. Steiner played strong defense and held Salisbury to only one goal in the first half. Steiner tied the score early in the second half, but our goalies only let in one more goal during the rest of the game. Lauren scored 4 times and Olivia added one of her own. The final score was 5-2. Ari, Johanna, Sabrina, and Angela each took a turn in goal. All of the girls played hard and should feel proud that they dominated an older and bigger team. Come cheer the girls on next Wednesday against Falls Village.
The Salisbury Central boys’ soccer team played one of the strongest games of the season in defeating the Rudolf Steiner School of Great Barrington four to one. Many of the skills and tactics learned so far were displayed to the delight of Coaches Bucceri and Delia. The score would have been more lopsided were it not for the excellent goalkeeping by Steiner in the second half. Brodie had a fine afternoon with two goals, while Jason and Nick completed the tallies. Elliot and Seth each had an assist. Jason had two.
October 4: The Lady Red Hawks brought home yet another win yesterday. They beat Sharon 6-0. Salisbury played an excellent game both offensively and defensively. The scoring was shared by Grace, Johanna, Lauren, Olivia, and a penalty kick from Angela. Hannah, Ari, Bailey, and Lauren each took a turn in goal to earn the shut out. The girls play at Trotta field this afternoon against Rudolph Steiner. Good luck girls!
The first ten minutes of yesterday’s game between the Salisbury Central boys and Sharon Center School reminded Coach Bucceri of the disappointing first half against Cornwall earlier this week. It appeared that the Red Hawks simply needed a bit more of a warm-up, as they controlled the remainder of the game and gained an eight to two victory. Elliot scored twice, including a wonderful header off a corner kick by Seth. The other goals were tallied by Seth, Amos, Garett, Nate, Justin, and Ollie. Assists were provided Finn and Seth, who each had two, and Brodie. Jensen contributed strong defense through his speed and determination. Soccer ends a busy week with games against Rudolf Steiner this afternoon. Though the schedule says that the girls will play here at school, it will actually be the boys who are here, while the girls’ perform at Trotta Field. Good luck players!
October 3: The girls’ soccer team brought home a 8-5 win over Cornwall on Monday. Our offense scored two quick goals in the first few minutes to give Salisbury the lead. Salisbury maintained the lead for the entire game. Salisbury racked up a total of 8 goals with a hat trick plus one from Lauren...that's four!, a hat trick from Olivia, and another was added by Olivia. Johanna was a trooper and played the entire game in the goal, making many saves and holding her own against a tough Cornwall team. The girls travel to Sharon today and they have a scrimmage against Steiner at Trotta field on Wednesday. Wish them luck!
Charles Dickens’ novel, A Tale of Two Cities begins, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” The Salisbury Central boys’ game against Cornwall yesterday reversed that quote. Cornwall dominated the first half, the Red Hawks made many mistakes and the score was six to nothing against our boys. During the second half, Salisbury kept the ball in the Cornwall end, had seven shots on goal, including a penalty kick, a ball off the crossbar and another off the post, but only one goal, by Jason, unassisted. Brodie made a brilliant move to draw the penalty kick. As the Red Hawks’ second half goalkeeper, Justin kept the momentum on our side with some important saves, but it was a combination of excellent goalkeeping by Cornwall and missed opportunities that kept Salisbury from making the final score more even.
September 26: The girl's soccer team improved its record to 3-1 with a 5-3 victory over Cornwall yesterday. The score was tied for most of the game, every time Salisbury scored, Cornwall would match with a goal of their own. In the last 10 minutes Salisbury poured on the steam and Lauren and Olivia each scored to give Salisbury the lead to win. Lauren was the offensive star of the game with 4 of the 5 goals. Olivia was the defensive star. She played the entire first half in goal and made many tremendous saves. Katie played hard and helped the team on defense. The girls play an undefeated Canaan team at Trotta field on Thursday. Come cheer the girls on.
No one can say that the Salisbury Central boys’ soccer team is not a group of fighters. They battled a strong and skillful Cornwall team from beginning to end under the difficult conditions of heat and tall grass. The Cornwall team dominated much of the first half and led two to nothing, but the Red Hawks rallied with a goal by Finn, assisted by Ian, shortly before halftime. Salisbury’s ball control improved in the second half and the play literally ran end to end and both teams increased the number of shots on goal dramatically. Brodie and Finn each scored goals on assists by Jason. Goalkeeper Seth made nine saves, including one on a penalty kick. Seth, Elliot, Liam, Amos, and Jensen were courageous on defense, but the talented left foot of a Cornwall seventh grader created two opposing goals and the final result was Cornwall 4, Salisbury 3. It was an incredible match and our boys have much of which to be proud.
September 22: The girls’ soccer team played their best game yet against Lee Kellogg yesterday. At half time the score was 6-0. Goals were scored by Lauryn, Grace , Carrie, Lauren, Olivia, and Olivia. Kellogg scored one goal in the second half making the final score 6-1. The star of the game was Hannah who played the entire second half in goal where she played really well. The girls play 2 home games next week against Cornwall and Canaan. Come cheer your teams on!
Even though they didn’t have enough players, it was good to see that Lee H. Kellogg School of Falls Village had a boys’ soccer team again. Coach Bucceri challenged the Salisbury Central boys by giving Kellogg some of his largest defensive players. That defence of Liam, Jensen, Amos and Garret played very well, but the Red Hawks offense still managed to score three times in a 3 to 0 victory. Jason netted two of the goals unassisted. In his first game in goal, George made two saves and converted a penalty kick to complete the Red Hawk scoring. It was a well played game by all.
September 19: The Lady Red Hawks pulled off a great win yesterday against Sharon. It was truly a team effort as all the girls had an opportunity to play. At halftime the score was 4 to 0. The final score was 6 to 3. Lauren led the team with 4 goals and Angela added 2 of her own. The star of the game was Sabrina who went into the goal in the second half for the first time ever. She saved her first penalty shot and received quite a cheer from the sidelines. Way to go girls! The team travels to Falls Village on Thursday.
On a beautiful afternoon in the northwest corner, the Salisbury Central boys played solidly as a team. Erin scored his first goal as a Red Hawk and added an assist in a four to one victory over Sharon Center School. Jason continued his scoring ways with two goals and an assist. Garret also had a goal and George tallied an assist. The midfield play of Finn kept control of the ball through most of the game. Great job boys!
September 15: The girl's soccer team suffered a tough 3-2 loss against Kent yesterday. The girls played hard and fought throughout the game. Olivia put us up 1-0 in the first half. Lauren made it 2-0 in the beginning of the second half, but Kent poured on the gas and scored three times after that. Angela and Olivia played well in goal and made many saves each. Annika was the star of the game playing outstanding defense and never letting up. The girl's play home against Sharon at Trotta field on Monday after school. Come cheer your girls on!
If there are many more games like yesterday’s game for the Salisbury Central boys, then Coach Delia will have to perform CPR on Coach Bucceri. The match against Kent Center started well enough. The Red Hawks spent most of the first half on the Kent side of the field. In addition to Jason unassisted goal, Nate put a shot over the crossbar and Justin hit it. Shortly before halftime, Finn added to the Salisbury lead with a well placed shot off an assist from Nick. Kent came roaring back in the second half, scoring twice to tie the game. With one minute remaining, Finn took a throw-in, passed it forward to Jason as he was sprinting toward Kent’s right corner. Battling mightily to keep possession of the ball and get beyond a determined defender, Jason took a hard shot that was too quick for the Kent goalkeeper and the Red Hawks prevailed three to two. It was an outstanding first match for both teams. Well done!
