The Ski Jumps

By B.J.

Salisbury has something which many towns don't. We have ski jumps, which are high and steep. They are one of only eight jumps in the northeast. We have three jumps here altogether, and even though they are the smallest of the northeast eight, the tallest is 64 ½ meters. That's about 250 feet high!

The ski jumps are in Salisbury on Indian Cave Road, and they have been in our community for seventy-seven years. Boys and girls of all ages can jump. They have a small jump for people to practice on in back of the bigger jumps. If you want to be a jumper, you have to have strong legs and you have to not be afraid to take risks. People come from all over the USA and even Europe to jump here. We even have Olympic Skiers that come here to train and compete.

The Salisbury Winter Sports Association holds a big tournament at the ski jumps in February called the Eastern Championships. 1500 to 2000 people come to watch! People can volunteer to help at the tournament if they want. If you would like to help, you can call Matt Kiefer at 435-2171.

The ski jumps are up all year round, but are only open for jumping in winter. These ski jumps are skier's favorite jumps in Connecticut. So go to the ski jumps.
