Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Squad

by Peter

The headquarters for the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Squad (SVAS) is located across from the White Hart Inn in Salisbury. It is a 38 member volunteer organization with plumbers, teachers, mechanics, and many other people from lots of different jobs.

This ambulance squad gets approximately 400 calls a year. They respond to calls such as medical emergencies, trauma emergencies, and search and rescue cases. The ambulance squad has four rescue vehicles. The "Jaws of Life" are in the green rescue truck. The inside of the ambulance has a stretcher for the patient, a small couch and chair for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or a patient's relative if they are keeping a patient company on the way to the hospital, and a slide-out table. It also has cabinets with lots of medical supplies and equipment.

If you want to be an EMT you need to be at least 16 years old. You also need to take an EMT course and pass a state test. You will have training in trauma and medical emergencies, CPR, and the use of special equipment like the AED. If you want to be an ambulance driver you also need to have a driver's license.

Our ambulance squad performs a very important service to our town. If you have some extra time in you life and care a lot about people, you might want to consider joining the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Squad. Ms. Rice, who met with me to tell me all about the ambulance, is the captain of the SVAS. You can call her if you want to find out more information at 860-435-0058.
