Resident
Trooper

Have you ever thought
about the job of a policeman or policewoman? Around here, we have state
troopers and a resident trooper. In this area, a state trooper has his
or her office at the Barracks in Canaan and is responsible for handling
situations all over the northwest corner of Connecticut. Our resident
trooper is responsible for only this town. His office is at the Town
Hall in Salisbury and his job is a little more personal. Our resident
trooper is Mr. Laurentano.
To be a resident trooper you need to be at least 18 years old and have
some training. Your training would include six months of basic training
at a police academy. The training is hard both physically and academically.
It gets you ready for the kind of work a policeman or policewoman would
do.
Mr. Laurentano gets many different kinds of calls. He gets animal abuse
calls, injury calls, calls for stolen property, and even calls if someone
is feeling afraid. He also does a lot of investigation work. He investigates
criminal matters, reckless, driving, motor vehicle accidents and speeding.
Mr. Laurentano also works in our school. He teaches the DARE program
to our 5th graders. This is the Drug Resistance Education Program.
Mr. Laurentano, our Salisbury Resident Trooper, loves his job. He says
it is very stressful but also a lot of fun. We are very lucky to have
our own resident trooper because not all towns do and it means that
we have someone always available to us that is close by. Thank you to
Mr. Laurentano for helping to keep our town a safe town.
