Salisbury Central School PTO
Meeting Minutes
January 8, 2008

Attending: Jennifer Segalla, Becky Lachaine, Marianne Ostendorf, Karen Grimaldi, Anne Upson, Rob Nellson, Christopher Butwill, Tracy Kaufman, Amy Lake

Call to Order: Jen Segalla called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.

Principal’s Report: Mr. Butwill would like to see more communication/interaction between the PTO and the Board of Education. Encouraged PTO attendance at Board meetings - always open meetings unless executive meeting is announced. The school is currently undergoing a Program Review - every program will be reviewed - self initiated by the board, it has been awhile since a review has been done.

Treasurer’s Report: Becky Lachaine reported that the PTO's budget is close to $10,000.00.

Old Business

Funding Requests:

Mr. Conklin (Middle School) requested $600.00 for an LCD projector to be used with new software to project subject material for the entire class to see at once vs. individually on a laptop screen. Unanimously approved.

Mrs. Janice Fitch requested $700.00 for the Ski Program to help offset costs for scholarship students. The present ski program budget is $600.00, so it would be a $100.00 increase. Funding amount has not been increased since 2004. Unanimously approved.

Hoe Down: Profited approximately $200.00. It was not meant to be a fundraising event, mainly for a fun, social evening.

New Business

Bus Procedures and Rules: Karen Grimaldi shared copies of a letter written by Laura Smith (parent) addressing the current rule that a student may not ride home on a bus with a fellow classmate if they do not normally ride that bus. Laura's letter was in favor of addressing the issue and changing the rule to allow students to ride a different bus for reasons relating to childcare, working on projects and play dates. Discussion followed regarding pros and cons. Mixed feelings. Informed that the topic will be included on the agenda for the next Board of Education meeting on January 28th at 5:30. Roger Rawlings, Board of Education Chairman, would like to hear feedback from parents either at the meeting, or via e-mail, www.roger@resourcevaluation.com .

Other:

Tracy Kaufman: Tracy had an idea for fundraising - a Salisbury Central School Cookbook. She brought in sample cookbooks for a company. Minimal order would be 200, depending upon style ordered, anywhere from $2-$3 per book. It would take approximately 8 weeks for the company to compile and bind books. Contents would be a collaboration of recipes from families at Salisbury Center School. Idea of using profits to supplement school lunch program by possibly offsetting the cost of organic milk, and other organic foods. Positive response from attendees. Tracy will draft a sample letter to send to families to solicit recipes. Some discussion to follow at next month's meeting.

Rob Nellson - Music in the Parks: He is still working on particulars for the Spring Band Trip. He would like the PTO to consider contributing to the cost of transportation. He would probably need two coach buses. Last year the PTO funded one coach bus for $935.00. Rob will keep the PTO informed of particulars to be voted on at a future meeting.

Discussion about PTO contributing funds or allocation funds to offset costs of field trips for scholarship students. Idea was presented to include wording on permission slip to give families the opportunity to donate money towards trips.

Topics to be included in next month's agenda:
Blood Drive
BOX TOPS for Education
Staff Appreciation Luncheon
Salisbury Central School Cookbook
Music in the Parks

Next Meeting is Tuesday, February 12th from 7:00-8:00
